    After the unequivocal success of the production of L’eau qui danse, la pomme qui chante et l’oiseau qui dit la vérité, the 13th new opera by Chants Libres seen by more than 1400 people, the company is already working on many important projects:

    • International Voices 2010, a professional workshop for singers slated for June 2010
    • Auditions for the 20th anniversary celebration for Chants Libres in February/March 2010
    • The remount of The Ice Child as part of the Vox Clamans Festival organised by the Center for Contemporary Opera in New York City in July 2010
    • Preparation for the special event to honour Chants Libres’ 20th anniversary planned for Spring 2011
    • The creation of Chants Libres’ next new opera for 2011-12 Alexandra inspired by the life of the explorer Alexandra David-Néel

  • Le critique devant l’Histoire… Lettre ouverte de Michel Gonneville

    En réponse à la critique de Christophe Huss parue dans Le Devoir du 20 novembre 2009, Michel Gonneville — compositeur, ancien élève de Gilles Tremblay et professeur de composition et d’analyse au Conservatoire de musique de Montréal — a écrit une lettre ouverte dont le contenu est publié ci-après dans son intégralité.

    Essayons de parler calmement, en apaisant l’émotion vécue lors de cette soirée du 19 novembre, où Chants Libres présentait en première mondiale l’Opéra féerie de Gilles Tremblay et Pierre Morency. Ce n’est pas facile, quand on a vu cet homme, ovationné par la foule, applaudir lui-même ses interprètes du haut du balcon, irradiant la sérénité par-delà les épreuves vécues. C’est à peu près aussi difficile que, disons, pour un critique qui cherche ses valeurs parmi la création musicale contemporaine et qui doit faire la part des choses alors qu’il se bute sur l’image d’un père honni (Pierre Boulez)…

  • Jean Bard, the stage designer of the Enchanted Opera is a finalist for the Siminovitch Prize!

    To create the magic within the Enchanted Opera, we recruited some of the biggest personalities in Quebecois live theatre. Behind the stage design, we find Jean Bard, a designer who is well known in the Montreal theatre scene since 1989. A designer of more than a hundred designs for repertory and new works, we are pleased to announce that he is finalist for the Siminovitch this year. The Siminovitch Prize for Theatre was created in 2001 in honour of the renowned scientist Lou Siminovitch and his wife Elinore, a dramatic author. This annual prize sponsored by BMO Financial Group, is the most important prize in the Canadian theatre world. It awards directors, designers and writers in an alternating 3 year cycle. It is with a certain measure of pride that we share this news with you.
