Chants Libres’ new opera based on a true story

16th new opera by Chants Libres, The Trials of Patricia Isasa will be premiered from May 19-21, 2016 at 8 PM at the Monument-National in the Quartier des spectacles.

This socio-political piece by Kristin Norderval (composer) and Naomi Wallace (librettist), directed by Pauline Vaillancourt and designed by the artist Dominique Blain, tells the true story of the Argentinean human rights activist Patricia Isasa. The opera brings together six soloists, an actor and a chorus, accompanied by seven musicians conducted by Cristian Gort. Lighting by Nancy Bussières, costumes by Marianne Thériault and make-up by Jacques-Lee Pelletier.

It is the first time Chants Libres produces an opera sung only in English.

An opera about recent political history

On March 24, 1976, 40 years ago, Argentina went through a military ‘Coup d’état’ and became a brutal dictatorship until 1983. During these dark times, 1.5 million people left the country and 30.000 were «disappeared». Patricia Isasa was one of the victims and also one of the rare survivors.

While she was a young student, Patricia was imprisoned at the age of 16 and tortured for more than two years by the military Junta. 33 years after her release, she brought her cause and those of thousands of other victims before the courts and managed to put forward evidence about the abuse of power by the politicians at the time, to identify her torturers and to make them face justice. Today, she has dedicated her life to dismantling the Latin American Training Center — the so-called «school of crime» and protests at the side of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo so that truth and justice be known.
