  • Some news on our 2015-16 season opening

    The Trials of Patricia Isasa

Our next production is in development with an extraordinary team: Kristin Norderval, composer, Naomi Wallace, libretto, Pauline Vaillancourt, stage direction, Dominique Blain, set design, Nancy Bussières, lighting, Jacques-Lee Pelletier, make-up and Marianne Thériault, assistant director and costume design. The world premiere will be presented on May 19, 20 and 21 at the Monument-National in Montréal.

    New York

For the first time in its history Chants Libres will be presenting a public reading of a new opera in New York at Roulette on January 13, 2016. The soloists and the musicians from the production will be conducted by Cristian Gort.

    Ensemble KÔ

We are happy to announce that the Ensemble KÔ, a choir of 20 members under the direction of Thiphaine Legrand, have joined us for the production of The Trials or Patricia Isasa!

In residence at Chants Libres in the month of November, Kristin Norderval and Pauline Vaillancourt will continue their collective work and will collaborate for the first time with the Ensemble KÔ, and continue their work with the soloists and the conductor. Nota bene: Miss Norderval, soprano, will perform the lead role of the elder Patricia Isasa in the opera.

    Pauline Vaillancourt

Last June, our artistic director was honoured with the Opera America Service Award for her 25 years of work for Chants Libres. Always on the go, she is leaving for Argentina in November to collaborate with Patricia Isasa on the opera that tells her incredible story.

    Yo soy la desintegración

The original version of Yo soy la desintegración starring Pauline Vaillancourt is now available on YouTube:

  • Oper’Actuel — Works In Progress 2015

Behind the scenes of new opera

Chants Libres is proud to present the 5th edition of its Oper’Actuel — Works In Progress event, which showcases new contemporary opera artists and which invites the audience to discover a whole range of new tendencies and possibilities in contemporary opera.

Four composer and librettist tandems were selected after a call for projects sent out in April 2014. Audiences will be able to hear excerpts from these four operas, performed by young singers and musicians from the Atelier de musique contemporaine de l’Université de Montréal, conducted by Cristian Gort and Lorraine Vaillancourt, and from the Ensemble Musiqu’Avenir of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, conducted by Véronique Lacroix. From one opera to the next, the audience will experience different aesthetics, styles and forms, through diverse tales and eras.
