Jean Décarie — Neam Cathod — has been working in the field of media arts as an electroacoustic composer since 1977 and as a videographer and multidisciplinary artist since 1982. His works have been presented nationally and internationally in festivals and exhibitions. Some of his video works are part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée National des Beaux‑Arts du Québec, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the Canadian Embassy in Japan.
Since 1990, he has been a professor in the Département des communications de l’UQAM in the interactif media sector. The scope of his research-creation comprises cognitive processes, perception and human behaviour using an ecological approach to the study of the person/machine relationship. He is interested in the creation of cybernetic and auto-poetic works which integrate organic entities (biofeedback). Another aspect of his research-creation comprises interactive media staging in urban spaces, but also in theatre, dance and opera.
