Biography

In Extensio is an instrumental chamber ensemble of variable instrumentation formed around the nucleus of flutist MariEve Lauzon, clarinetist Louise Campbell and percussionist Barah Héon-Morissette. Founded in 2005, the ensemble is named using the Latin phrase in extensio, which siginifies extension and elongation. As suggested by this phrase, In Extensio draws inspiration from creation of new works, variations and additions to ensemble instrumentation, and exploration of new sounds and concert formats. The ensemble mandate is thus to reach new and diverse audiences, renew the traditional concert hall and seek out new venues, and explore uses of technology and multidisciplinary practices. Keeping in mind the words ’Creativity, Innovation, and Technology’, the founding musicians are continually developing close collaborations with composers and a rich dialoque with the public.

In Extensio’s inaugural concert was presented in the Up to Your Ears festival (Innovations in Concert) in August of 2005 with a guest pianist. Since this time, the ensemble has been featured in Montreal in concerts produced by the Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur, Codes d’accès and Innovations en concert, a self-production at Mainline Theatre, as well as in Jonquière in the Festival des musiques de création du Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean with guest guitarist de Étienne Guérin. To date, In Extensio has commissioned works from composers André Cayer (with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Canadian Music Centre), Emily Hall, Geof Holbrook (with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts), Tomio Lorenzo, Neil Middleton, Darren Miller, Etelka Nyilasi, Tawnie Olson, René Oréa-Sanchez, Tomi Räisänen, Malina Rauschenfels and Yiorgos Vassilandonakis. From the beginning, In Extensio has constructed their repertoire aound concert themes which are then proposed to the composers with whom they work in close collaboration. This artistic process has thus far given rise to concert cycles entitled Urbanism-Urbanity (2007-08), Topography (2009-10) and Pro-fusion (2009).
