Biography

Originally from New York, Zack Settel studied musical composition at the California Institute of the Arts with Leonard Stein, Morton Subotnick and Mel Powell, moving on to MIT, before settling in Paris in 1986, on a Fulbright Scholarship at IRCAM, and then as a musical assistant for 6 years. From 1997 to 1999, Settel was the Director of the Music Technology program at McGill University in Montreal where he also taught.

Usually his compositions integrate interactive systems of live electroacoustic digital processing.

He has composed many scores for theatre, film, video and televsision, as well as for musical theatre and dance. He has composed 2 operas for Chants Libres L’Enfant des glaces (2001) and Pacamambo (2002). His works have been published by Amrioso (Paris) and have been recorded on the Centaur, ICMA, MIT Press and Empreintes Digitales labels. His music is regularly played in North America, Europe and Asia. Settels has worked with ensembles such as the Ensemble intercontemporain (Paris), the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (Montreal), Zeitgeist (Minneapolis) and the California Ear Unit (Los Angeles).
