Montréal, Monday, March 25, 2013 — For the fourth edition of Oper’Actuel 2013 Works In Progress, Chants Libres, is giving Montrealers the opportunity to live an exciting adventure: to be the first to hear excerpts of four entirely new operas presented by composers and librettists.

Young singers and musicians from Atelier de musique contemporaine de l’Université de Montréal, conducted by Cristian Gort, Atelier de musique de chambre de l’Université de Montréal, conducted by Jean-Loup Gagnon and Les salons de l’ombre jaune ensemble, will perform, one after the other, excerpts from four operas in development. From one opera to the next, we will experience different aesthetics, styles and forms, through diverse tales and eras.

Marie-Pierre Brasset (Quebec) plunges us into one of those daily dramas of modern life (La piñata, libretto by Nicolas Lemieux); Kristin Norderval (Norway/USA) gives us a poetic opera which brings to life history at its biggest and smallest forms, through the telling of the tragic destiny of the Argentine Patricia Isasa (Trials of Patricia Isasa, libretto by Naomi Wallace); Nickos Harizanos (Greece) explores psychic meanderings inspired by a classic Greek myth (Médéa Sparagmata opus 135, libretto by Euripides); Pierre Michaud (New-Brunswick), for his part gives us a Felliniesque take on opera (Le rêve de Grégoire, libretto by Pierre Michaud).

The composers (except for Nickos Harizanos) will be in attendance at Oper’Actuel Works In Progress 2013 and will hear, at the same time as the audience, the first sounds emanating from their scores, which will have a boomerang effect on the development of their operas, revitalized by hearing the staged performances. The two performances will be hosted by the soprano and director Pauline Vaillancourt, Artistic and General Director of Chants Libres.

The four pieces (from the more than thirty submitted) were selected following an international contest organized by Chants Libres, to allow for the emergence of new opera writing, to interest singers in new approaches to the vocal arts, and to allow new audiences to discover excerpts of these works in progress.

Oper’Actuel 2013 Works In Progress: A must-see on the mainstage of the Maison de la culture Frontenac, Friday April 19 at 8 PM and Saturday April 20, 2013 at 4 PM, for those who are curious about discovering opera from our time, and about creative artists, singers, musicians and conductors who are working in a spirit of freedom.

Thank You
