Chants Libres, under the artistic direction of Pauline Vaillancourt, is proud to present the 5th edition of its Oper’Actuel — Works In Progress event, which gives audiences the opportunity to discover a whole range of new music and new possibilities for opera. Previous editions allowed 23 composers to hear and see their new opera projects as works in progress and allowed 45 singers and a large number of musicians to gain valuable experience in the creation of new music. This pedagogical and creative event brings together producers, professionals, teachers and creative artists in a singular event, and opens the doors to a new and young audience.

Four composer and librettist tandems were selected after a call for projects sent out in April 2014. Audiences will be able to hear excerpts from these four operas, performed by young singers and musicians from various contemporary music workshops, during two free performances at the Maison de la culture Frontenac, March 27th and 28th, 2015.

This event is presented with the collaboration of Maison de la culture Frontenac, the Atelier de musique contemporaine of the University of Montreal, conducted by Cristian Gort, and the Ensemble de musique Avenir of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, conducted by Véronique Lacroix.

Chants Libres has a mandate to support new artists working in contemporary music, most notably through its Oper’Actuel — Works In Progress event. This initiative allows us to discover and to develop the potential of young composers, librettists and performers. This biennial event is a unique occasion to witness the creative process, and also to encourage the emergence of new opera forms, to familiarize young singers to this kind of writing and to allow audiences to experience a multiplicity of musical styles, stemming from a new era in music.
